Frequently Asked Questions

  • How often do you give placement tests?
    We offer year-round testing.

  • Which tests should students take?
    New students to Mt. SAC should take the Assessment of Written English (AWE) and Degrees of Reading Power (DRP) test for their English and Reading placement. Student wishing to take math should take a math placement test.

  • How often can a student take a placement test?
    A student may retest after three months.

  • Do you have career/interest assessments?
    If a student wishes to take a career/interest assessment, the student must make an appointment with a counselor in the Counseling office.

  • How long are placement tests valid?
    Tests are valid for two years.

  • How long does it take for students to receive test results?
    Reading, math and chemistry placement test results are ready in 24 hours or less. English results vary from one to three working days to a week.

  • Are there study guides to help students prepare for placement tests?
    We have study guides to help students prepare for all tests except the chemistry test. For chemistry; it is advised that students review a high school chemistry book.

  • Do you accept placement tests from other colleges?
    We only accept the Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project's Elementary Algebra Diagnostic Test, Intermediate Algebra Diagnostic Test, and Precalculus Diagnostic Test for math if taken within the past two years.  We do not accept English placement test from other colleges.

  • If a student has a disability and has trouble taking the placement tests, what are the options?
    Students with disabilities who may have trouble taking tests should be referred to the Disabled Students Programs and Services office.
